UTR Number

A UTR (Unique Tax Reference) number is issued to you or your company by HMRC to identify you as a tax payer.

If you are a sole trader you will have a 10 digit UTR number issued under your name.

If you have a partnership, the partnership will have its own UTR number, as will each individual partner.

Similarly, if you have a limited company, the company would be issued a UTR number along with additional UTR numbers for each director.

When your business was registered, HMRC should have written to you with the UTR number(s) included on the front of their correspondence.

If you have misplaced your UTR number(s) or have not received them yet then you can contact HMRC for a reminder of the UTR number over the phone: https://www.gov.uk/contact-hmrc.
